A Practical and Elegant Bedside Table
If you’ve ever looked for the perfect nightstand for your bedroom, you know that finding one that’s both functional and stylish can be a challenge. Sander’s slim nightstand is not only a practical addition to your interior, but it’s also a beautiful DIY project that will inspire you to take matters into your own hands.
The Construction of the Bedside Table
This bedside table is custom made from MDF Blank 12mm, a versatile wood that is ideal for creating furniture with a sleek finish. All panels are carefully cut to size using the OPMAATZAGEN.nl platform, which ensures that each piece fits perfectly without any adjustments. The four shelves provide ample storage space for books and other small items that you want to have within reach next to your bed.
Color and Details that Stand Out
The choice of MDF Blank gives the bedside table a natural, light look that contrasts nicely with dark or colorful bedrooms. Sander has chosen to paint the bedside table in a soft shade, which makes it fit in seamlessly with the atmosphere of the room.
The Ideal Bedside Table for a Box Spring
Thanks to its narrow design, this nightstand is the perfect piece of furniture to place next to a box spring. It fits easily into the limited space, while still leaving enough room to move around and keep the room airy and open. This keeps the bedroom calm and tidy, without sacrificing functionality.
Benefits of Making Your Own
Making this bedside table yourself offers numerous advantages. You have the freedom to fully adjust the dimensions and design to your own wishes. This makes it possible to create a piece of furniture that fits perfectly with your existing interior and needs. The use of MDF Blank 12 mm offers an excellent balance between strength and ease of processing, making it ideal for both experienced and novice DIYers.
The Style: Minimalist Elegance
The simple lines and sleek finish of the bedside table reflect a minimalist style that is popular in modern interiors. The understated design ensures that the bedside table complements any bedroom style without being overwhelming.
Advantages of MDF Blank 12 mm
The MDF Blank 12mm used for this project is an ideal choice for furniture due to its smooth surface that is easy to paint, giving it a sleek and professional finish. The material is also extremely versatile, allowing you to cut it into almost any shape without it splintering or breaking.

Step by step guide
Preparation
- Our box spring with storage space under the bed is quite high. In combination with a smaller bedroom, a standard nightstand did not fit. The solution we chose is to make a narrow but relatively high loose space behind the box spring stand out. After recording the exact measurements, we started drawing the cabinet in a CAD program. The measurements of the required shelves can then easily be obtained from the CAD program.
- Milling the grooves of the beams. For this narrow design I have chosen milled planks.
Montage
- Due to the exact plank sizes it was then a matter of gluing together without dowels or screws for the best result. The milled planks fit so exactly in the slots that this alone gives more than enough rigidity in the cabinet.
Finish
- The cabinet is finished with a "chalky finish" paint that dries so quickly that no pretreatment was necessary for the highly absorbent surface of MDF. Not even for the end edges of the MDF. Because the cabinet is quite narrow and I wanted to paint the inside anyway, I glued the second side board on after painting the inside.
