Custom-made knee walls for the ideal attic cupboard
The attic is often an underused space in the home. But thanks to the inspiring project by Vitas, you can transform it into a functional and aesthetic storage space. With custom-made knee walls and attic cabinets, you can create an organised environment, perfect for storing things that would otherwise be lying around. The combination of Timberboard Oak A/B and MDF Primed, ordered from OPMAATZAGEN.nl, provides a perfect balance between robustness and refinement.
Project details
This DIY project, carried out by Vitas, makes optimal use of the available space under the sloping roof of the attic. The knee walls were cut to size by OPMAATZAGEN.nl, which ensures a perfect fit and a sleek look. The use of Timberboard Oak A/B and MDF Primed gives the whole a modern, yet timeless look.
A smart organization
The knee walls are equipped with built-in cupboards that are hidden behind sleek panels. The doors are seamlessly embedded and equipped with solid hinges, which makes the attic cupboards open and close smoothly. This way you have easy access to your things, without making concessions to style.
Why knee walls are ideal for the attic
By placing knee walls in the attic, you make optimal use of the often unused space under the sloping roof. It ensures a neat appearance and prevents things from being visible lying around. In addition, it gives you the freedom to adjust the cabinets to your wishes, whether it concerns the number of shelves or the size of the storage space.
Benefits of making it yourself
The beauty of this DIY project is its flexibility. By making the knee walls and cabinets yourself, you not only determine the dimensions, but also the choice of materials. This project shows how you can create a functional and stylish solution with the right materials and a well-thought-out design.
The style: Scandinavian minimalism
The final result exudes Scandinavian minimalism. The combination of light colours and clean lines make it a calming addition to the attic. The use of white MDF Primed panels provides a neutralising effect that fits into any interior.
Works easily with MDF Primed
MDF Primed provides an excellent base for paint and provides a smooth finish. It is ideal for projects where you want to create a sleek, uncluttered look. In addition, MDF is virtually seamless and provides the perfect structure for precise detailing.

Step by step guide
Preparation
Measure and draw the cabinet. What is the design? How wide do you want the doors? And do you choose hinges? After drawing and measuring twice (measuring once does not count :-)) you can order.
Montage
- I started by laying the bottom rail, which I placed perpendicularly using a cross-line laser. Then I secured the uprights where I wanted them. I drilled the planks so that the hinges fit in. As a final step, I placed the doors and numbered everything.
Finish
Then I took out all the doors (with numbers so you know where they belong) and painted them. Don't forget to seal the sides of the MDF with edge sealer.
- When installing the doors you can adjust everything and we gave the places that needed it a final lick of paint.
