Design your ideal dining room bench

Have you ever dreamed of a homemade dining bench that perfectly matches the atmosphere of your interior? Meet Thomas' project, who has made his vision of a multifunctional dining area a reality. Be inspired by how he created a cozy and practical corner bench, complete with smart storage space and atmospheric details.

Functional and stylish

The kitchen features a sleek, modern dining bench. Thomas opted for a neutral colour palette that blends seamlessly into the interior. The soft cushions on top provide comfortable seating, while the white primed panels of Multiplex Interieur Populier give a fresh, clean look.

The construction of the corner sofa

Thomas started with a sturdy pine frame, custom-made by OPMAATZAGEN.nl. He then installed lids that provide access to the spacious storage chests underneath. These handcrafted benches not only serve as seating, but also house handy storage chests for all sorts of kitchen utensils, greatly increasing the kitchen’s storage capacity.

Flexibility and freedom of choice

By making this bench himself, Thomas was able to tailor the dimensions to the exact space available in his kitchen. This DIY approach gave him the freedom to choose materials that were both within his budget and aesthetically pleasing. The result is a dining area that is both practical and visually appealing.

A unique addition to the dining room

What makes this project extra special is the matching step stool that Thomas designed. This stool complements the corner sofa and can also serve as extra storage space.

The advantages of Multiplex Interior Poplar Primed wood

Multiplex Interior Poplar Primed 18 mm and 9 mm, the two types of wood used, are known for their smooth surfaces. Ideal for a fresh finish and easy to maintain, which contributes to the long life of the project.

Step by step guide

Preparation

The 44mm x 44mm and 69mm x 44mm pine slats were ordered and cut to size at a DIY store with the help of a sawing diagram. These will make the frame of the bench and stool. All dimensions were exactly to size according to the 3D model design. Some slats had to be cut to certain angles with a miter saw.
The Poplar Multiplex primed 18mm and 9mm panels for the sides and tops of the bench and stool were ordered from OPMAATZAGEN.nl

Finish

First make the long side of the bench frame, followed by the short side. Then assemble the stool. The short side of the bench is attached to the long side of the bench for extra stability.
Sand the 18mm poplar plywood panels smooth on the sides and paint them.
Fill all holes and screw holes with wood filler. Felt pads under the bench and legs of the stool. Felt strips on the edge of the bench where the lids of the storage close.
Sand and paint the sides of the bench and stool.
Put on the cushions and you're done!

Montage

Attach the 18mm plywood sheets to the top of the bench, as well as the steps of the stool. Attach the bench lids with piano hinges to the short and long sides of the bench.
Some of the 9mm plywood panels still need to be finished. Such as the handle of the stool, the air holes of the litter box, and the entrance of the litter box. After that, these panels can be mounted to the side of the sofa.
