Enrich your kitchen with a homemade kitchen trolley
Dreaming of extra workspace and storage convenience in your kitchen? Discover how Thomas created a mobile kitchen island that is not only stylish, but also highly functional. His DIY kitchen trolley is the ultimate example of how, with a little creativity and the right materials, you can create a kitchen trolley entirely to your own taste and needs.
Get inspired by this unique project
Thomas opted for a sturdy black finish. Using OPMAATZAGEN.nl, the MDF Moisture-resistant V313 panels were cut to size perfectly, which formed the basis for a smooth construction process.
Functional design
The trolley's spacious drawer offers plenty of space for kitchen utensils, while the sturdy shelves provide ample space for cookbooks, bowls or storage jars. The orange wheels not only provide a surprising colour accent, but also make it easy to move. This makes the kitchen trolley a dynamic element in the kitchen that is always where you need it.
Why make it all yourself?
The advantages of building it yourself are legion. Firstly, there is complete control over the dimensions, which means the kitchen trolley fits exactly into the available space. In addition, putting together your own materials offers the opportunity to fully reflect your own style, as Thomas has shown with his striking colour combinations and sleek lines. Budget-conscious DIY? Making it yourself often means considerable savings without compromising on quality.
The style of Thomas' project
Thomas was looking for a perfect balance between modern and practical, and that is exactly what his trolley exudes. The black gives the furniture a timeless and stylish look, while the orange wheels give it a contemporary twist. The minimalism that speaks from the design lines is accentuated by the choice of slim handles, which gives the furniture an extra dimension of elegance.
The power of MDF Moisture Resistant V313
The heart of this project is the MDF Moisture Resistant V313 Black 18 mm. This type of wood is specially designed to withstand humid conditions, such as those often found in the kitchen. In addition, the black colour offers a deep, rich appearance that remains beautiful over time, and the thickness of 18 mm ensures a solid construction of the kitchen trolley.

Step by step guide
Preparation
- I have cut the black pdf to size according to the measurements of my Sketch up drawing with the plunge saw. The legs are made of 2 pieces that are sawn 45 degrees and then glued.
Montage
First I made the whole frame. Then mounted the shelves. Finally the worktop and the foldable worktop.
Finish
- I used Cosmo hardway oil. First I did a few layers where I rubbed it out well with a cloth after 20 minutes. The layer thickness was not enough. Then I did 2 very thin layers with a roller.
- The trolley works very well in practice. It is extra work space in our small kitchen. In the drawer are containers with herbs.
