Create a unique shoe storage solution
Can you already see it: a practical, beautiful shoe cabinet that fits perfectly in your hallway, with various compartments and handy drawers to keep everything organized? With the right materials and a little inspiration, you can bring this idea to life. In this inspiration project realized by Gerco, you will discover how you can make such a versatile shoe cabinet yourself from waterproof mdf.
The construction of the shoe cabinet
Gerco's project is a showcase of craftsmanship and design. The shoe cabinet is constructed from various custom-cut MDF panels from OPMAATZAGEN.nl. The cabinet consists of layered compartments that are perfect for storing shoes of different sizes. The drawers, fitted with sleek metal runners, offer extra storage space for accessories.
A stylish addition to the hall
This custom piece of furniture fits seamlessly into the hall, where functionality and style go hand in hand. The warm colour of the MDF contributes to the inviting atmosphere of this much-visited part of the house.
Advantages of self-build
Making your own shoe cabinet has several advantages. First of all, there is the flexibility in terms of dimensions; you determine the perfect dimensions for your space. In addition, you enjoy the freedom in choice of materials, where you can choose a budget-friendly option such as MDF.
Style and finish
The final result of Gerco's project is a shoe cabinet with a contemporary style that has a modern look due to the matte finish. The specific dimensions and the choice of streamlined handles make it a unique piece of furniture that is perfectly tailored to the user.
The advantages of MDF Moisture-resistant V313 Paint carrier film 18 mm
The type of wood used for this shoe cabinet has several advantages. MDF Moisture-resistant V313 with Lacquer-based foil is specially designed for use in humid conditions, such as in a hall where shoes are often wet when they enter. In addition, the lacquer-based foil ensures a smooth finish, making the cabinet easy to paint in any desired colour.

Step by step guide
Preparation
Make a drawing of your furniture in a drawing program (e.g. Sketchup). Look at the exact dimensions required per plank and give each plank a unique characteristic. Process the dimensions in the cutting list of OPMAATZAGEN.nl and select the correct materials.
Montage
- Consider how you want to attach the planks. I myself used a domino cutter in combination with wood glue. You can also choose to screw the planks together and then neatly finish the screw holes with filler, but I preferred to create invisible connections. First assemble the piece of furniture without glue or dominoes/dowels to check that all dimensions are correct. Think carefully about the order in which you should attach the planks. You must use a certain order to prevent you from no longer being able to attach part of the planks.
Finish
- Make sure you sand the end sides very fine so that they are just as smooth as the top and bottom with paint carrier foil. Prime the end side twice before you paint the whole thing.
- We placed it in front of the meter cupboard and for that reason mounted wheels under the cupboard so that it can easily be rolled forwards and backwards.
