Description

MDF lightweight is the lightweight, untreated version of the many types of MDF available. The board consists of wood fibres that are compressed under high pressure, but lower than standard MDF. This makes the material easy to process and does not splinter. By using a different pressing, the material is lighter and easy to move. It is important to degrease the material well before painting. The material also has an absorbent effect. It is therefore only suitable for indoor applications and in dry conditions.

Ordering MDF lightweight boards online

Order cut-to-size MDF lightweight easily online. You can have MDF sawn or milled into various shapes. The most popular shape is a rectangle, but we also cut circles, ovals, hexagons or even parallelograms to size. For example, if you have a round dining table in mind, choose the 'circle' shape in the product configurator, or go for a rectangle with rounded corners. Do you want your do-it-yourself project neatly finished? Then choose one of the available (edge) finishes.

MDF lightweight: what is it?

MDF is a popular board material that can be used for countless projects. MDF lightweight is almost equal to the standard MDF blank. The difference lies mainly in the way the board is produced. Standard MDF is finished by pressing the outer layer more compactly than the core. This forms a protective layer around the core. This layer also contains more fibres per cubic metre than the core of the board. This makes the board heavier. In lightweight MDF, the press settings are changed during production so that more air enters between the fibres. This makes the material much lighter. Useful for projects where load-bearing capacity or weight play an important role.

MDF lightweight is a construction board. This means that this board material requires the necessary finishing before it can be used for visible work.

Available thicknesses MDF lightweight

With us you can order lightweight MDF of high quality and in various thicknesses. You can easily specify the desired thickness in the product configurator. This way, you can be sure that the board material meets your requirements: both the format and the thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 15 mm, 18 mm, 30 mm, 38 mm, 50 mm and 60 mm.

Machining of MDF lightweight boards

Lightweight MDF consists of wood fibres that are compressed under relatively high pressure. This makes the material easy to process. When milling or sawing, this board material does not splinter. The fibres are held together by resin. Therefore, it is important to degrease the board properly before painting it. The material also has a suction effect, which is why we recommend always finishing the edges with an edge sealer. For this reason, lightweight MDF is only suitable for indoor applications and in dry conditions.

Are you going to paint MDF? Then it is a good idea to countersink the screws and to seal them with filler. Then sand and paint the whole thing in one go.

Specific applications of lightweight MDF

MDF is the material of choice for furniture and interior applications. Lightweight MDF is a versatile board that is suitable for various interior panelling applications. A door, a casing for pipework, a bookshelf, a TV cabinet and a partition are possible applications. MDF lightweight is especially the right choice for applications such as: a door core, modular furniture, exhibition construction, but also in some worktops. MDF lightweight combines the wide application of MDF blank, also called standard MDF, with the advantages of a lighter material. Because the boards contain fewer fibres per cubic metre, the board is sensitive to moisture absorption. The boards are therefore not suitable for use in bathrooms, kitchens or other areas where high humidity is present.

Alternatives to lightweight MDF

Is lightweight MDF not the right wood type for your job? Looking for board material with a grain? Then go for poplar plywood. Do you want board material that can be used outdoors? Then take a look at phenolic plywood, MDF tricoya or multiplex okoumé. Or view our other MDF boards here:
